Hi everyone! Lately I’ve been talking a lot about the animation unit and here we are! We’ve been working on an animation in class that I may post on my portfolio. While working on this project, we have to make a ton of frames and save them one by one, which is a very tedious task. Then put them all together using an editing software to make our animated video. I’ve learn that this was going to be a lot harder and longer than I thought, plus I got off to a slow start. I also am still slightly new to Illustrator, so it will take me a lot longer to do this animation. Also along with the fact that I don’t know how to use an audio/video editing software. That may make the process longer. So yes, those are my views on our first animation project.

It’s that time folks! The time is here, when the animation unit comes around. So today, in this blog post, I will be reviewing traditional animation. I selected traditional animation for its traditional style. Traditional animation is where you first draw or sketch out the scene on paper, then transfer to a computer. When doing this, you are drawing/sketching the character and background. Then once you finish drawing your scene, you photocopy it onto cels. A cel is a transparent acetate sheet used for photography. But with the use of today’s technology, cels are considered outdated. People now create the drawing, then scan them into a computer to be colored digitally. Also thanks to new technology, we are able to use drawing pads and not use paper for animating. If I had to choose between using a drawing tablet and paper & pencil for animating, I would choose the drawing tablet. Speaking of drawing, let’s talk about how Adobe Illustrator can be used to animate. Since Illustrator is a drawing program, you can use it to draw your characters (or background) using the drawing tablet. Or you can use Illustrator to trace over your sketch. And with Illustrator’s group/ungroup function, you can move small things around when drawing/tracing. Photoshop can also be used if you want to use a bitmap graphic program instead of a vector graphic program. I prefer to use bitmap editing programs. But once I use Illustrator a little more, I’ll begin to use vector graphic programs more.
